Faculty | ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Ashley Academy offers a strong academic foundation, as well as fostering a love for learning in Kindergarten through fourth grade. Programs are designed to enrich the whole child and classes remain small to guarantee maximum success for each
student. Creativity, curiosity, responsibility and self-direction are fostered through the
teachers’ instruction methods and progressive curriculum. Individualized learning all ows each student to work to his or her maximum potential. The Ashley Academy Elementary Program offers excellent preparation for the approaching middle school years.
The Elementary Program emphasizes the learning of basic skills in the areas of: language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. Foreign language, music, art, computer, library and physical education are part of each child’s weekly curriculum. Enhanced learning skills including: problem solving, listening, communicating, seeing, and understanding are emphasized within the classroom. Curriculum related field trips, visual media, and speakers allow students to expand their concept of education beyond the classroom. Small classes provide the opportunity for lasting friendships and ample participation in many hands-on activities.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Through whole group, small group, and individual activities, the children’s exploration of language is guided and challenged. Group discussions, reading various genre, songs and poetry, phonics and whole language instruction, reading buddies, and literature appreciation are all utilized in the reading program. Grammar skills, handwriting, spelling, creative writing and oral expression are all important components of the Ashley Academy Language Arts program.
MATH: Students begin learning basic math concepts with an expanded curriculum of multiplication, addition, subtraction, division, and an introduction to geometry. Various types of problem solving skills are used in each math unit along with math manipulatives. Individualized instruction and group activities engage the students’ learning.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Topics include in-depth studies of different communities, families, U.S. and Tennessee history, foreign countries and regions of the earth. Learning is promoted by hands-on activities and field trips that stimulate children’s natural curiosity about the world.
SCIENCE: Students learn about plants, animals, the environment, geology, prehistoric life, heat, light, sound, magnetism, the human body, meteorology, energy, matter and electricity, along with many other topics. Hand-on experiments, along with thinking and observational skills, are emphasized.
 ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS: Ashley Academy offers two foreign languages: French and Spanish. These classes provide instruction in listening, understanding, reading,
speaking, and writing. Students are also introduced to the culture and customs of the countries where the language is spoken.
The Art Program at Ashley Academy allows students to draw, paint, and work with clay as well as various other media in order to
develop and explore personal expression. Famous paintings and works of art, and art history are studied in context of the studio art.
The Music Program is designed to teach students a broad repertoire of songs suited to their age and voice range. Rhythm and movement, note reading and instruments are used to enhance the program. 
Physical education allows students to acquire skills
and coordination, to learn a variety of sports and their rules, and develop a positive attitude through a variety of physical activities.
Computer instruction allows students to fortify skills they learn in academic subjects. Students develop proficient word processing skills, typing skills, and guided Internet research.
Ashley Academy academic faculty are all certified teachers, and chosen for their enthusiasm, creativity, and ability to understand the needs of children. Students attend classes 5 days a week beginning at 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m., with
extended care available. Hot lunch is available, or children may bring their own lunch. |
