MIDDLE SCHOOL

Ashley Academy believes that each student is an individual with talent and potential unlike that of any other student. Encouragement is given to help children develop and display self-confidence, intellectual curiosity, creativity, moral strength, and leadership. Ashley Academy’s school configuration allows middle school students to develop leadership training and serve as role models to the preschool and elementary students. Field trips are used to reinforce classroom instruction and promote interest in subject-related careers. An annual middle school class trip is a valuable extension to the academic program. Students have traveled to various areas, including Washington D.C., Charleston, SC., and Williamsburg, VA. Ashley Academy provides a nurturing atmosphere, which encourages individual expression. Independence of thought, self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for others are valued and reinforced.

LANGUAGE ARTS: The Language Arts program at Ashley Academy promotes an in-depth understanding of grammar, creative writing, literature, vocabulary and spelling. Classes focus on the development of skills for effective communication and critical thinking in a variety of styles and settings. Literature study encompasses the work of major American and European writers. Public speaking, book reports, poetry, storytelling, research and writing skills, and extensive vocabulary building are important components of the courses offered.

MATH: Ashley Academy's Math Program broadens the scope of the students' understanding of mathematical concepts and reinforces these concepts in real-life applications. The small class sizes allows teachers to improve student performance and to adapt students' learning needs to best prepare them for high school mathematics. There is a strong emphasis on computation and mathematical reasoning so that the students can advance to algebraic skills with ease and confidence. Many students are able to complete Algebra I while attending Ashley Academy allowing them to take advanced math classes in high school.

SOCIAL STUDIES: The curriculum includes study of Ancient Civilizations and Medieval History, World History, Tennessee History, U.S. History, and World Geography. Students participate in many thought-provoking projects including construction of models and dioramas, developing and acting in mock historic events, and in making in-depth studies which result in written research papers, artistic projects, and oral presentations.

SCIENCE: Ashley Academy students study challenging life, earth, and physical sciences. Scientific concepts and processes are explored through hands-on activities, creative problem-solving, and the use of technology. With the exception of 8th grade, all middle school students participate in our annual science fair.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS: Weekly enrichment programs enhance the educational experience of students at Ashley Academy. Students take foreign language: French or Spanish. Foreign language instruction includes listening, understanding, reading, speaking, and writing. The Art Program provides experiences in art history, art appreciation, and the use of various art media. The art curriculum encourages learning through hands-on activities, discussions, original work, and a variety of visual materials. The music curriculum is designed to teach students fundamental principles and skills. Instrument design and function, notation, singing, movement, and music history are all elements of the music program. Ashley Academy’s physical education program emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play. Students acquire fundamental skills, knowledge of games and their rules, and positive attitudes through a variety of physical activities. Computer education in our computer lab provides for multi-level study of computer uses. Internet based research and interactive educational tools are key to most upper level class work. In addition to learning proficient word processing skills, all students learn to utilize digital media for research presentations and portfolios.

To meet high academic standards, Ashley Academy’s middle school has an outstanding faculty and small class sizes. The program allows students to work with teachers who are experts in their field while emphasizing the importance of a strong academic foundation. Students attend classes 5 days a week, from 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. with extended care available. Hot lunch is available, or students may bring their own lunch.
